About the Trout.
The History of the Trouties
The Trout Anglers Club, Edinburgh has a rich history dating back to the late 19th century.
It was during 1886 that the idea of forming social clubs for anglers in Scotland was first suggested through a letter to the ‘Scots Angler’ paper. Following this, a group of dedicated anglers decided to establish the Scottish Trout Anglers’ Association in 1898, and the Edinburgh Branch of the Association was formed the subsequent year. The first meeting of the Trout Anglers’ Club in Edinburgh took place on 16th November 1899.
Originally located on Rutland Street, the club moved to its current premises at 29 Dundas Street in 1966. The club aims to promote social activities among anglers and further the interests of their art.
Over the years, the Edinburgh Trout Anglers’ Club has been graced with several members who have achieved international honors in angling.
The Club Today
In the beginning our members were very much trout anglers, almost exclusively from a drifting boat and almost always on Loch Leven. Today’s fishing members now fish with the fly for many species around the world, fresh and salt water. The majority of our fishing is still trout and salmon, and our annual club championship remains trout outings fishing from a boat. We have ten outings per season results contributing towards our various trophy presentations. We do have non fishing members who support the ethos of the club.
With our clubhouse located in the centre of the Edinburgh New Town it is an ideal meeting place and social hub. The clubhouse is open twice a week Tuesday and Friday which are members nights 5pm till 11pm. The clubhouse is only for members and their guests not open to the public. Members may hire the club for private social events. We have a snooker/billiards group who enjoy our full-size table in the billiards room. There are several club social events organised and impromptu across the year. Our mix of members means there is always a positive and lively vibe in the club. Our membership continues to grow.
A modern clubhouse
Our clubrooms had been practically untouched since they were opened in 1966, a refit and refurbishments were overdue. After much soul-searching as to the purpose of the club going forward, members decided a rethink was necessary to create a club fit for the future. As luck would have it, works begun just prior to covid, however, due to the fact much of the works were being done by members companies we managed to progress although slowly. In sept 2022 works were complete. All works have been done to the highest standards and interiors fitted out with the support of our interior designer Mel Scullion. The club now has refurbished reception hall. Billiard room with full size table. Large lounge bar. Smaller snug lounge. Gents’ cloakroom and toilet. Ladies powder room and toilets. There is a fully fitted catering kitchen for events. There is a small garden. The refit has been done sympathetically to retain much of the original ambiance and character of the club. Members nights are now well attended, and the club has proven a popular venue for private parties. The club can be hired by outside organisations at the committee’s discretion for suitable events.
